Flagship Pioneering Summer Fellowship 2027

Spend a summer helping create a company from a scientific idea.

Flagship Pioneering Fellowship

What it is

Flagship Pioneering’s Summer Fellowship is a 12-week, full-time, paid placement at Flagship’s base in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for scientists, engineers, inventors and data scientists who want to help create companies from scratch. The 2027 Fellowship runs from 7 June to 27 August, with a stipend of around $8,000 a month.

Flagship is the firm behind Moderna and has created more than 100 ventures in human health, sustainability, AI and beyond. It has run the Fellowship since 2009. Fellows work alongside Flagship’s team, taking bold scientific ideas and shaping them into hypotheses that could become new companies.

AI runs through all of Flagship’s work, so there is no longer a separate AI/ML track. Basic scientists, data scientists and applied AI/ML researchers all apply through the same route, at any level of AI experience.

What you’ll do

Fellows work in teams. They start from “What if?” or “If only…” questions, and combine their scientific instincts with the latest AI tools to generate ideas that go beyond existing research. Then they test and refine those ideas into hypotheses strong enough to found a company on.

As a Fellow, you will:

  • learn Flagship’s process for generating and refining venture hypotheses
  • explore ideas with the potential to become breakthrough companies
  • work with AI tools alongside your own scientific judgement, with training and support
  • meet and learn from Flagship’s Associates, Partners and CEOs across its companies
  • explore full-time roles at Flagship and its portfolio companies

Where it leads

The Fellowship is a main route into Flagship. Fellows have gone on to Associate roles on its venture creation teams, founding leadership roles at Flagship companies, and careers at companies such as AstraZeneca, Alnylam and Biogen, and at institutions including Stanford, MIT and the Broad Institute.

Who it’s for

  • Deep expertise in any scientific or technical field, such as biology, chemistry, agriculture, engineering or materials science, or experience applying AI/ML to one of them
  • Broad scientific interests and the ability to ask provocative questions in any domain
  • A completed PhD, MD or international equivalent, or in your final year of one
  • Comfort with uncertainty, a self-starter mentality, and a strong record as a leader, communicator and team player
